Ok, so you have found that you have some very unwelcome and unwanted visitors in the form of fleas and now you really have to do something positive and quickly to get rid of fleas in your home. Firstly, do not panic I know how horrible you probably feel but everyone at some point becomes victim to these grotty little pests. Nobody want to admit to it now do they? So, to see some instant results using flea traps is a fantastic place to start.
The reasons for how you have come to be infested does not really have a bearing on what you do next because once you have them, you need them gone. Generally, you can be more prone if you have animals be it a cat, dog or rabbit and unfortunately your furry friends as well as we humans are a prime target for a meal. Being warm blooded we apparently taste good to the average flea, I know it is gross.
So, if you have been in your yard putting out laundry or, your pet has been snoozing or mooching around out there too, then our little friend the flea, attracted by the warmth, vibration and CO2 that we give off will hitch a ride and chow down. The result of that is to see your animal scratching or twitching more than usual or you will see the tell tale hard, red, raised itching lumps that are bites on yourself.
Once the female has had her fill she will then lay her eggs, between 45 to 50 per day and the scarily big number of up to 600 in her life time (do not think about the maths it is not good) The eggs will drop off anywhere that your pet has access to and the next stage of the lifecycle begins which is larva into pupa and full circle into adult.
So, the first thing that is absolutely imperative is to kill the adults, which can be done using flea traps. They work on the principles of giving off warmth and vibration, thereby mimicking a really good meal to the hopping hordes. Good for us because they are obviously attracted to what they think is food, bad for them because they will be going to meet a timely demise in a environmentally friendly and humane way.
Secondly, if you have pets then you need to treat them with powder or drops and a collar in order to prevent any eggs and larva from developing and creating more problems for you and your feline or canine friends.
Any pet bedding (including your own if you share with your animals) should be put through a really hot wash in your washing machine and then treat your home and animal sleeping areas by the use of powder and vacuuming thoroughly. Using flea traps will really ensure that you can control and monitor even the most severe infestations very easily and with no danger to your family or furry friends they have to be the way forward in beating them.
